Holly (latin: Ilex aquifoliaceae) is perhaps most famous for its role in Christmas traditions – deck the halls with boughs of holly, falalas. It is an evergreen tree or shrub native to western and southern Europe, northwest Africa, and southwest Asia. It prefers the moist, shady undergrowth of Oak or Beech forests.
In Celtic mythology, while the Oak was the controller of the light half of the year, Holly controlled the dark winter months. Holly was planted around the home to protect against lightning strikes and evil spirits.
Holly symbolizes fertility, peace, goodwill, and protection.
