The European Alder tree (latin: Alnus glutinosa) is native to most of Europe, southwest Asia, and Northern Africa. He loves to get his feet wet, and is a pioneer species that does especially well in poor quality soils – where he teams up with the bacterium Frankia alni to fix nitrogen into the soil.
The Alder provides food and shelter for many animals, insects, lichens, and fungi. He is monoecious: producing male and female flowers on the same tree. His wood is resistant to decay – even underwater.
The Alder symbolizes the balance of female and male principles, strength, and confidence.
