The Bur Oak Tree (latin: Quercus macrocarpa) is native to Eastern and Central North America. He is one of the most massive oaks – some trunk diameters of up to 3 meters! He lives for 200-300 years, but have been known to live to 400.
He produces the largest acorns of all North American Oaks, and, like most oaks, uses an evolutionary strategy called 'masting' – producing smaller quantities of nuts, but every few years a huge crop of nuts are produced in order to overwhelm seed predators and ensure reproduction.
The Bur Oak typically grows out in the open, and is part of the oak savanna ecology – an ecology type often simulated in restoration agriculture, growing nut crops in alleyways along with Apple trees, currants, and other species. (See 'Restoration Agriculture' by Mark Shepard for more information).
The Oak Tree is a symbol of power and strength, wisdom and longevity.
