The Paper Birch Tree (latin: Betula papyrifera) is a pioneer species. She sees the devastation of a forest fire or clearcutting as an opportunity to do the good work of retaining and protecting the soil, and preparing the way for other species to join in.
She grows in many conditions – from steep rocky slopes to flat bogs; though they grow the best in deep, well drained soils.
The Paper Birch is tapped, like the maple, to produce a rich, dark syrup – but it takes many more liters of sap to produce one liter of syrup.
The Paper Birch is a symbol of rebirth, new beginnings, growth, and the promise of what is to come.
