The Blackthorn Tree (latin: Prunus spinosa) is a prickly shrub with long thorns that can cause septic flesh wounds (ouch!). Its leaves turn yellow in the fall, and leave behind dark, gnarly, twisted limbs in the winter. It produces small, blue-black fruit that ripen after the first frost.
In Celtic lore, the Blackthorn is depicted as a tree of ill omen. Called 'Straif' in the Ogham, the English word 'strife' is said to derive from this.
In the fairy tale Sleeping Beauty, Blackthorns formed the thick, impenetrable thorn bramble that protected the Sleeping Beauty.
The Blackthorn Tree is a symbol of protection, hope, and overcoming obstacles for a better future; the balance between light and darkness, the inevitability of death.
